2007 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
The 2007 Club Championship was played at Bird Creek Golf Club this past weekend with Tony Walsh and Kathy Deaton earning the titles of Club Champions in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Friday’s first round got started only to be delayed by 90 minutes due to the heavy rain that fell in the Port Austin area. The players continued play at 5pm in extremely windy conditions that made every shot a challenge. The men had to finish their round on Saturday morning due to darkeness. A total of 81 players participated.
Kathy Deaton,
Utica
, shot 90 and took a 1 shot lead over Mary Jo Risch, Port Austin in the ladies championship flight. Saturday’s round two saw Deaton stretch her lead to 4 shots over Risch after 36 holes while posting an 87. The final round got interesting after the first nine as Risch pulled to within 1 shot of Deaton. Both women played well on the back nine but Deaton nipped Risch in the end by firing another 87 to Risch’s 85 for a two stroke victory. It is Deaton’s first Club Champion victory.
In the men’s division, Terry Souva,
Cass
City
, fired an 80 in round one to open a 5 shot lead over Andy Preston, Port Austin and Tony Walsh,
Macomb
. Saturday’s second round was better for Walsh as he posted a 79 to pull within one shot after the second round. Souva shot an 83 and
Preston
an 80 in round 2. Souva opened a two shot lead with nine holes remaining in the tournament only to see Walsh put together a one under par 35 on the back side to Souva’s 38 and capture his third championship by one shot.
