Golf Course Condition Report
April 28, 2008

After several days of great golfing weather, the weather has turned much cooler. The average high temperature for this time of year is 58, so after being well above the average for much of the past two weeks we will stay well below that for a couple more days.

A total of 106 stumps were removed this past weekend.  We are now in the process of removing the shavings and filling the holes with dirt. As I mentioned in previous reports these stump holes will be seeded in out-of-play areas and sod will be laid on those that are in play.   This will clean up the golf course substantially.

The warm weather that we had last week has gotten the broadleaf weeds out. Dandelion and Clover are making their spring appearance and I will be spraying them this week to get them under control. I also will be making our first application of fertilizer to the greens to get them growing.  Now is a good time to put out your spring fertilizer with crabgrass preventer.  A good rule of thumb is when the Forsythia start to bloom, it is time to get that Crabgrass preventer out on your lawns.  Any fertilizer with Dimension or Barricade will work and Scott’s fertilizer with Haltz also works well.

This spring we planted 90 seedlings in our “tree nursery” out by #2 tee.  There were 50 red maples, 20 Colorado Blue Spruce, 10 Norway Spruce and 10 Cedars.  There are several trees in that nursery that are ready to get moved out to the golf course and that will take place during the season.  When a tree is moved I will be putting mulch around it.  This will serve a dual purpose to help keep the moisture in around the tree, along with keeping equipment such as mowers and string trimmers away from them, which will give the tree a better chance of survival. These trees will be staked, and if your ball rests in the mulch around one of these trees you will be able to take relief with no penalty.  Eric and I will be working on this once we start moving the trees.

Well that’s it for now.  I look forward to seeing you out on the golf course.  If you have any questions about these topics or any other, feel free to contact me at the office (738-6874) or via email at bobomakowski@yahoo.com.
